The parish priest to the faithful: “God tells us that the gym and nightlife are not essential”

After the rumors, the drafts and the controversies, Giuseppe Conte signed the second Dpcm of October and today, around 1.30 pm (but with the usual delay we have become accustomed to by now) he illustrated it to the Italians. Between nightlife services, with restaurants and bars closed at 6pm, gyms, aesthetic censers, swimming pools, theaters and cinemas that cannot even lift their shutters, a question ran on social media: what about the churches? The churches remain open. There are many protests that have arisen in this sense, especially from Italians who, due to the new restrictions, risk seeing their business fail despite the investments made in the previous months to adapt the premises to the indications of the government. The coronavirus must be contained and greater sacrifices are asked. But not at all.

God, through concrete things, is bringing us back to a hierarchy of values and basically tells us that going to the gym or doing move it is less important“, so said Father Ottavio
De Bertolis, of the Church of the Gesù in Rome. His words resounded within the walls of the ecclesiastical building during the homily of the morning mass, a speech made in order to soften the faithful in view of the new restrictions that, shortly thereafter, the Prime Minister would announce. The parish priest explained Giueppe Conte’s Dpcm but he did it from his point of view, that of faith and religion: “The Lord brings us back toessential and, not to make an éndorsement to the government that is deciding in these hours, but you see in the end, in this way it is like a return to the essential in a time in which everyone, close to his own tree, remembers that there are many trees, that is, charity towards one’s neighbor, and that the world is not habitable only by having yourself as the beginning and end of all things“.

Obviously, his is a religious examination, which wants to convince the faithful to accept the new constraints as if they were almost an act of faith towards the Lord: “Now the Lord, even through very concrete things, is telling us that it is more important to study and go to the gym, although I am also a gym, it is less important. Going for the nightlife is actually less important. It seems to me that the Lord is teaching us one hierarchy of values that we had forgotten“. It is a heartfelt homily that of Don Ottavio to his faithful, who to better explain his concept even makes use of one of the most popular pop bands of all time:”We forget the Lord as in fact we have forgotten him for at least 50 years. I don’t want to be included in that list of clergymen, who also exist, who are modern day floggers. But look, come on Beatles onwards, Imagine (Lennon’s masterpiece, ed) is a world without God in which everyone actually lives for themselves“. Don Ottavio does not condemn this new course, because”it is still a living together but everyone thinking about their own belly and beyond, as has been demonstrated later. We can say that in the last fifty years we have inflated life losing its objectivity and proportions“.
