Department of Education donates food for 75,000 people

The School Food Authority, also known as School Canteens and which is attached to the Department of Education (DE), donated 263,904 pounds of food to 80 non-profit organizations in Puerto Rico that serve people in need.

The Secretary of Education, Eligio Hernández Pérez, explained this Monday that with this delivery of products there are more than 350 thousand pounds of food donated to organizations that, at a minimum, would provide food for about 75 thousand people. The previous time, School Canteens, in coordination with the State Agency for Food and Nutrition Services, delivered 110 thousand pounds of food to the Salvation Army and the Food Bank.

“These foods will reach those most in need through these organizations throughout the island. In Education we are committed to offering food rations to those who need it and these entities fulfill that mission. To protect the health of our 3,590 employees in school canteens, which 60% are in the high-risk population, we serve, through these organizations, a balanced and nutritious menu, “he said.
