Densus Claims to Have Evidence NII Wants to Overthrow the Government Before 2024

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Special Detachment (Densus) 88 Anti-terror Police say that the terrorist group the Indonesian Islamic State (NII) plans to overthrow the government before 2024. Densus claims to have evidence of this plan.

This was revealed from the process of examining and developing 16 terrorist suspects who were arrested in the West Sumatra region in March 2022.

“The evidence found also shows that a number of plans are being prepared by the West Sumatra NII network, namely efforts to overthrow a sovereign government before the 2024 election year,” said Head of the Operational Assistance Section (Kabagbanops) of Densus 88 Anti-terror Police Kombes Aswin Siregar to reporters, Monday (18 /4).

Aswin did not explain further about the evidence and the efforts that the NII will take to seize power before the 2024 General Election.

He only explained that the group still adheres to the thoughts of NII in the Kartosuwiryo era. Aswin said this group wanted to replace the Pancasila ideology and the Indonesian government system with a caliphate or Islamic law.

According to Aswin, the overthrow was also followed by a number of terrorist acts that could potentially pose a threat to the public.

“There is also a potential threat in the form of a terror attack which is contained in the order to prepare sharp weapons and also look for blacksmiths,” he explained.

CNNIndonesia.com have not been able to confirm this statement of the Police to other parties.

NII is an armed rebellion movement. This group is led by Sekarmadji Maridjan Kartosoewirjo. He was arrested and executed in 1962.

The now unrecognized movement later split into a terrorist group in Indonesia, namely Jamaah Islamiyah (JI).

Police suspect that this network still has 1,125 members. Where, there are members who have taken allegiance or oath of allegiance but have not been active in NII activities.

“With 1,125 members, around 400 of them are active personnel,” said the Head of the Public Information Bureau (Karopenmas) of the National Police Brigadier General Ahmad Ramadhan to reporters, Monday (11/4).

According to him, the NII members can be activated at any time if the organization needs it. According to him, this network has an organizational structure and continues to grow.
