Dengue fever: 5,000 cases in 10 months, epidemic confirmed

All epidemiological surveillance indicators confirm a trend towards an increase in the viral circulation of dengue in Martinique. The epidemiological bulletin published on Friday, May 22, 2020, currently identifies 5,000 clinically suggestive cases and 1,415 biologically confirmed cases

The circulation of the dengue virus is strong in Martinique. Between May 11 and May 17, the weekly number of clinically suggestive cases of dengue fever reached the highest level since the virus re-emerged in 2019.
The spatial distribution of biologically confirmed cases shows an extension of viral circulation over a larger part of the territory.

The epidemiological bulletin published on Friday, May 22, 2020, currently lists 5,000 clinically suggestive cases and 1,415 biologically confirmed cases.

SOS Doctors carried out 70 visits last week for suspected dengue fever.

Geographical distribution

In view of the figures for the period of the last three weeks (from April 20 to May 17) the biologically confirmed cases of dengue are distributed in 25 of the 34 municipalities of Martinique.

We observe the highest incidence of confirmed cases of dengue mainly in the South of Martinique: 5 municipalities report incidences higher than 10 cases per 10 000 inhabitants (Rivière-Salée, Sainte-Anne, Sainte-Luce, Le Marin and the Trois-Ilets).

The commune of Morne-Vert is the only one to present a high incidence in the North of the territory (more than 10 cases per 10 000 inhabitants).

Two serious indigenous cases of dengue fever were hospitalized in an intensive care or intensive care unit. One of these two cases died and was classified as directly related to dengue fever.

The Dengue Monitoring Technical Committee was consulted to examine the dengue situation and confirmed the epidemic in Martinique. This committee proposed a transition to phase 4 level 1 of the PSAGE dengue, (Monitoring, alert and management program for dengue epidemics).

Between July 1, 2019 and May 17, 2020, the cumulative estimated number of clinically suggestive cases of dengue fever is 5,000 cases.
