Demos, counter-protests & RB against BVB: Leipzig is gearing up for a large-scale operation

Saturday will be a tough one for the Leipzig police. In addition to several demonstrations, the top Bundesliga match between RB and BVB will also take place in the evening.

The action network “Leipzig takes place” announced that it wants to hold demonstration trains from Connewitzer Kreuz and Rabet on foot and as a bicycle demonstration from Lindenauer Markt at 2 p.m.
The central rally is to take place from 2.30 p.m. on Augustusplatz.
These are protests against the demonstration of the “Leipzig Citizens’ Movement”, which is planned for 7pm on Richard-Wagner-Platz next to the Höfe am Brühl. According to the police, a second is also planned as an elevator in the area of the inner city ring. It is advertised with the slogan: “For peace, freedom and sovereignty”.

They want to get Leipzig “back on the streets” – “like a year ago”. Back then, on November 7, 2020, a large lateral thinking demo took place on Augustusplatz, at which, according to various estimates, up to 45,000 participants had appeared.
Because many of them opposed the Corona requirements, it was canceled. Afterwards there were violent clashes, burning barricades and several injured people.
This scenario “must not be repeated”, announced “Leipzig takes place”.

The Leipzig police have now announced that they have to be prepared for “extensive traffic disruptions” on Saturday. This also applies in particular to football fans who are arriving and who want to watch the game between RB Leipzig and BVB in the Red Bull Arena. Kick-off is at 6.30 p.m.
Due to the various demonstrations, closures must be expected, which could affect public transport as well as individual traffic.
The Saxon riot police, forces from other federal states, water cannons, a cavalry squadron and possibly a police helicopter will be in action.

Since the early warning level could be reached on Friday due to the increasing corona incidences and hospital bed occupancy, the police are also preparing to adjust the deployment. It is possible that only fixed assemblies will then be allowed.
As the German Press Agency has meanwhile reported, the planned demonstration against the corona measures will probably be significantly restricted. “We are assuming that we will not get the planned number of participants of 3,000 people and also the planned march over the Leipzig inner city ring not approved,” said the meeting leader of the “Movement Leipzig”, Bernd Ringel, on Wednesday.
