Death toll from storms in Italy and France rises to nine

Four of the seven bodies washed up on the coast between the border town of Ventimiglia and Santo Stefano al Mare, according to the Italian police. A fifth person was found further inland near a river. The victims have not yet been identified, they may be from France.

The bodies of two missing people were already found yesterday. French rescue workers are still looking for 21 missing persons. Nearly a thousand French soldiers have been sent to the affected area to help with the cleanup and search for the missing.

In the Italian regions of Piedmont and Liguria and north of Nice, the heaviest rain fell since 1958, as much as in six months. The storm caused millions of euros in damage.

Floating coffins

In Italy several roads and bridges have been destroyed by the landslides. Streets are full of rubble, mud and car wrecks.

In the village of Tanaro, high water destroyed a graveyard, bringing up and carrying dozens of coffins. Near the Swiss border, 630 millimeters of rain fell in 24 hours. That is more than half the amount that normally falls in a year.
