The death toll from the sinking of a migrant boat off the Tunisian coast has risen to 46, local authorities report Thursday. On Tuesday, already twenty bodies of deceased persons on board found itafter which the coastguard and army started a search. Dozens of people were still missing at the time.
There were 53 migrants on board, the majority of whom were from Central Africa. The boat departed on June 4 from the Tunisian city of Sfax, towards Italy. It is still unknown when the ship sank and what exactly happened.
Tunisian authorities will investigate who is responsible for human trafficking. The country has been dealing with migrants for years trying to make the crossing to Europe from the east coast.
This route is very dangerous. Last year passed away there are still 86 African migrants after their boat capsized off the coast of Tunisia. That was one of the worst boat accidents off the coast of the North African country.
