On the website change.org, a petition that demands “Justice for George Floyd ” collected 17.3 million signatures in a few days. But it also raises a controversy. Dozens of former platform employees denounce the fact that donations made by certain signatories go directly to the site and not to the victim’s family, reports BFMTV, which relays an article by The Verge.
A practice denounced by former employees
The functioning of change.org is as follows: after having signed a petition, the Internet user is invited to make a possible donation which goes directly to the platform. The latter must then use it to promote the petition and thus attempt to collect more signatures.
But this practice is today denounced by former employees who believe that the platform “Take advantage of the death of black people”. They therefore ask that the donations collected be returned to George Floyd’s family in an article published on Medium.
Faced with this controversy, change.org indicated to have “Temporarily disabled” the fundraising tool for popular petitions.
