Darmstadt: Wandrey re-elected party leader

Paul Georg Wandrey was re-elected as chairman of the CDU Darmstadt during a party congress with 75 percent of the vote. When he was re-elected two years ago, the 29-year-old civil engineer had received 93 percent of the vote. Of the 54 delegates present, Wandrey received 39 votes in favor, with two abstentions and 13 against. The parliamentary group leader Ines Claus, who was responsible for chairing the session, spoke of an “honest result” that encourages committed further work.

In addition to Claus, the previously independent digital minister Kristina Sinemus, who has been a member of the CDU district association in Darmstadt for a few weeks, took a seat on the stage in the orangery.

The 38-year-old industrial engineer Isabelle Zybok (90.4 percent), the 41-year-old lawyer Caroline Groß (85.4), the 67-year-old administrator and former Hessian constitutional protection president Roland Desch (67.3) became Wandrey’s deputies Alexander Schleith is also one of the two chairmen of the CDU parliamentary group, and 59-year-old business economist Hans Wegel was elected, for whom only 55.8 percent of the votes were cast. Groß, Desch and Wegel were confirmed as deputy party leaders, Zybok was newly elected after the former deputy party leader René Kirch no longer ran for the post after moving.

In his speech, Wandrey avoided evaluating the coalition’s work with the Greens. Instead, he listed “political successes” of the CDU, such as the video surveillance on Luisenplatz that had not yet been implemented, the increase in the number of local police officers or the use of motorized traffic.

The delegate said goodbye to the delegates with a standing ovation. He left the party after 20 years for health reasons. jjo
