Czech zoos allow lonely chimpanzees to video call each other | NOW

Two chimpanzee houses in the Czech Republic have been linked through video calling services to address the lack of social contact the animals experienced during the corona pandemic. That writes the news agency Reuters.

Zookeeper Gabriela Linhartova reports in conversation with Reuters that in the beginning the animals had to get used to the big screens in their enclosure, but as the days went on they looked at each other’s lives with increasing interest.

In addition, the animals began to exhibit “human traits”. For example, the chimpanzees would flare up at “stressful” moments and they would collect nuts and other food before “watching TV” to eat during the session.

The livestream can also be followed on the website of the Czech zoos. No sound has been added online or in the animal enclosure.

In any case, the zoos will keep the chimpanzees in contact with each other via video calling services until the end of March, after which the initiative will be evaluated.
