Czech Artists Call for Cease-Fire in Gaza and Israel, Joining Global Movement

339 artists signed an open letter to the Czech government and President Petr Pavl to call for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip and Israel. In a letter, the group joined the American initiative Artists4Ceasefire (artists for a cease-fire) and demands that the Czech representatives call for a ceasefire, an end to the bombing and a permanent ceasefire. Published letter signed by, for example, Tomáš and Tamara Klus, Emma Smetana, Jordan Haj, Bára Basiková, Klára Výtisková, Jan Cina and Vojtěch Dyk. There has been criticism from supporters of Israel that the symbolism of the protest is reminiscent of the killing of two Israeli soldiers in Rafah in 2000.

The open letter was brought to the attention of a group of artists at the Angel Awards on Saturday, where they unfurled a banner with the words “Artists for ceasefire”. Following the example of their American colleagues, some artists also pinned placards with a hand symbol and a black heart on a red background. A similar protest took place at this year’s Oscars. According to the server novinky.cz, this symbol was criticized by representatives of the Jewish community because it is supposed to resemble a photograph from the massacre of Israelis in 2000 in Ramallah. According to the terrorist organization Hamas, 32,782 Palestinians died in the Gaza Strip in almost half a year of fighting.

“We have come together as artists, but above all as human beings who witness the devastating loss of life and ongoing horrors in Gaza and the West Bank. Together we ask the representatives of the Czech Republic to call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza and Israel before thousands more will lose their lives,” the open letter reads. The artists also want Czech officials to call for an immediate end to the blockade of food, water, electricity and humanitarian aid. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned in a report last week that a famine will break out in the north of the Gaza Strip by May at the latest without further measures, and could spread to the rest of the strip by July.

Czech artists follow the American movement Artists4Ceasefire, whose open letter to President Joe Biden was signed by, for example, Jennifer Lopez, Joaqin Phoenix and Ben Affleck. The hand sign they use to show support for Palestine symbolizes the urgency of the call to save lives, according to the initiative’s website. However, Israeli Prime Minister Ofir Gendelman’s spokesman said on his X profile that the red hand symbol was reminiscent of a photo of the 2000 lynching of two Israelis by Palestinians at a Ramallah police station. “To those who wore a red hand badge at the Oscars – every Israeli remembers the lynching of two Palestinian soldiers in 2000. The killers soaked their hands in the blood of their victims and celebrated their murder. Don’t support this,” he wrote on the X network.

The war in Gaza began on October 7 with a terrorist attack by the Hamas movement on Israel, during which Palestinian militants killed almost 1,200 people and kidnapped 250 people to Gaza. Of that, roughly half are still being held back. Israel’s retaliatory massive bombing and ground operations left more than 32,780 Palestinians dead and 75,300 injured Hamas figures cannot be independently verified.
