Marriage in vain

The popular TV series premiered way back in 2010, but the story starts long before that time.

Kody and Meri met for the first time in 1989, and married the following year. Meri herself was part of a polygamist family as a child, and grew up with as many as 25 siblings. In 1995, the couple had their first and only child together, their son Leon (27) – who came out as transgender and queer last June.

Three years after Kody’s first wedding, he met what would become his second wife – Janelle. They entered into a spiritual marriage in 1993, and the Brown family thus became polygamous. In 1994, they also had their first child together, Logan (28). In addition, they have Madison (27), Hunter (25), Garrison (24), Gabriel (21) and Savanah (18) together.

Despite Kody meeting his third wife Christine as early as 1990, they didn’t go on their first date until four years later. The following month they also entered into a spiritual marriage. The year was 1994 and Kody was “married” to three women.

Like Meri, Christine had also grown up in a polygamous family. In the series she has, according to Peoplepreviously stated that she had also envisioned it for herself.

– I wanted to be the third wife. I never had any desire to be a ‘first’ wife at all … I wanted to be the third because it sounded the easiest, she is said to have said.

The couple had a total of six children together: daughters Aspyn (27), Mykelti (26), Gwendlyn (21), Ysabel (19), Truely (12) and son Paedon (24).

Divorced for adoption

For 15 years, Kody, his three wives and children lived a happy polygamous family life. But in 2009, he met a woman named Robyn during a church visit. They were spiritually married the following year and Kody adopted her three children from a previous marriage: Dayton (22), Aurora (20) and Breanna (19). They have also had a son Solomon (11) and a daughter Ariella (6) together.

However, the turning point came in 2014. Until then, Kody had been legally married to Meri, and spiritually married to the other three. That year, however, Kody chose to divorce Meri so that he and Robyn could enter into a legal marriage. Kody and Meri remained a couple, and rather entered into a spiritual marriage.

By this time, the reality series was well underway and had been rolling across TV screens for several years already. The large family, led by Kody and his four wives, originally lived in Utah – but saw themselves forced to move to Las Vegas to escape the state’s strict anti-polygamy law. Later it moved on to Flagstaff, Arizona, in four temporary, separate homes.

But it would turn out that there were more obstacles in front of them than the regulations.

Ended up in couples therapy

The divorce between Meri and Kody is said to have been to make it easier for Kody to adopt Robyn’s child. However, the first wife is said to have taken her husband’s decision somewhat more seriously than first thought.

This should have led to Meri finding herself in the middle of what is referred to as a “catfishing scandal” in 2016, after she entered into a relationship over the internet. The person, whom she thought was a man, later turned out to be a woman. The situation led Kody and Meri into couples therapy, to get help dealing with the affair.

Despite that, their relationship is said to have developed to be more platonic than romantic, and as time went on the atmosphere became more and more tense.

– I’m tired

In 2021 it was Kody and Janelle’s relationship that made headlines, after the latter was able to tell that she was living in an RV parked outside Kody’s property. Later she also stated that she had doubts about whether polygamy was still something for her, wrote People.

Janelle stated in the series that she had been struggling ever since the family had moved to Flagstaff, and that she felt that her husband did not support her.

– I’m tired of not having his support when I really need it. I’m just bored. I need a partner. I need something different than this, she said.

Still, it was Christine who chose to leave the Brown family first. It was the beginning of the end for the man with four wives.

Breaking, breaking and breaking again

I november 2021 Christine snapped at Kodyand in retrospect she has said that the breakup was partly a result of his relationship with their joint child – or rather: lack of relationship.

In December, she appeared on the “Reality Life with Kate Casey” podcast and said that the children had been disappointed with their father for years and believed that he did not prioritize spending time with them.

– I saw it in their eyes that they felt that they didn’t really have a close relationship with him. It hurt them to see how he was so good with the other children, and not with them.

Christine and Kody were spiritually married for 26 years.

The rumors were true

The next person out was Janelle.

Unlike Meri, who saw Christine’s breakup with Kody as a huge betrayal, Janelle was more understanding and supportive.

– Janelle and I have been close through the whole thing. She’s amazing, Christine said of Janelle at the time.

It didn’t take long before speculation began that Janelle’s reaction was a foreshadowing that she too would end her relationship with Kody. The confirmation came in December.

– Me and Janelle are divorced, Kody admitted in the series.

From four to one wife

Despite the fact that Meri’s reaction to Christine’s breakup with Kody in 2021 was not of the positive kind, it would turn out that neither Meri relationship with Kody was durable.

After 32 years, it became known in December that Kody’s very first wife is no longer part of the polygamy – and Kody is therefore left with only one of four wives, Robyn.

The breakup became known through “Sister Wives: One on One”, where Meri says that Kody decided that they should no longer be married, and that he no longer considered himself married to her, writes People.

In the episode, she expresses that her relationship with Kody improved after they moved to Flagstaff.

– He made me think he tried. You know, the first anniversary we had here in Flagstaff we toasted “to a new beginning,” as opposed to our last anniversary where he said, “I don’t know why you called me, Meri. We are not married. We don’t act like we’re married,” she is said to have said.

Struggling after the breaks

So then only Kody and Robyn are left in the marriage, which previously consisted of five people. Robyn herself has said in “Sister Wives: One on One” that her husband has refused to take in more wives, which she personally is not entirely happy with.

In the episode, reproduced by Peopleshe says that she has really struggled with the idea of continuing in a monogamous marriage with Kody, as she still envisions a polygamous life.

– I do not know what to do. It’s messing with my identity. It is not the future I wanted, she has said.

At the time of writing, it is not certain when or if there will be an 18th season of the popular TLC program.
