Cyclone Mandus; 4 dead in Tamil Nadu; Rain threatens also in Kerala

Chennai: Cyclone Mandus caused severe damage in Tamil Nadu. Cyclone Mandus is an extremely low pressure that formed in the southwest Bay of Bengal. The cyclone that crossed the coast at Mamallapuram caused damage in the city and surrounding areas. Mandus reached the coast last night.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said 400 trees in the city were uprooted when the wind reached a speed of 70 km/h. Stalin also reported that four people died in the state as a result of the damage caused by the cyclone. After reviewing the situation in the Kasimedu area, the Chief Minister informed that the situation was expected and all preventive measures were being taken.

25,000 volunteers have been deployed to affected areas. The Prime Minister also pointed out that 22 subways in the city have been flooded so that vehicular traffic is running smoothly. Relief operations are also underway in the neighboring districts of Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Villupuram. Electricity was cut off in 600 locations due to damage to power poles and transformers in the cyclone.

An exact damage estimate in the state has yet to be recorded. The Prime Minister has advised that central assistance will be requested if necessary. Rescue centers have been set up in the state. The State Minister of Revenue and Disaster Management had informed that more than 9,000 people are staying in 205 relief centres. As soon as the typhoon warning came, the people living in the shacks in the coastal areas were transferred to the relief centre.

Heavy rains are also likely in Kerala under the influence of Cyclone Mandus. According to the notification from the Central Meteorological Department, the rains may intensify in Kerala for the next 3 days. According to this, a yellow alert was issued in various districts of Kerala on the 11th, 12th and 13th. The yellow alert was announced in 5 districts on Sunday and in 9 districts on Monday and Tuesday. Along with this, the Central Meteorological Department also informed that you should not go fishing on 12th and 13th December in Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coasts.
