CYCLING: Peter Sagan has significantly improved in the UCI rankings after Around Slovakia in 2021

BRATISLAVA. Petr Sagan’s overall triumph in the Around Slovakia race was reflected in his significant improvement in the International Cycling Union (UCI) rankings.

In the stage renking, the UCI jumped from 72nd to 47th place, and in a more comprehensive UCI World ranking, Sagan ranks 51st, having previously been ten places lower.

In the renaming of one-day races (One Day Race), Sagan is in 62nd place.

Van Aert dominates the Slovenians

The leader of the main UCI World ranking, which takes into account all the results of the whole season, not only on the elite World Tour, is the Belgian universal Wout van Aert from the Jumbo-Visma team.

Behind him are the Slovenian winner of the Tour de France Tadej Pogačar (Team SAE) and the champion Vuelta, another Slovenian, Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma).

In the evaluation of the stage races (Stage Race), Pogačar is ahead of Roglič and Colombian Egan Bernal from the Ineos Grenadiers group.

The one-time renking is led by Van Aert in front of the reigning world champion Frenchman Julian Alaphilipp (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) and the Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix).

Sagan is in the company of legends

Sagan’s triumph on Around Slovakia has another statistical impact. The 31-year-old Žilina achieved the 119th victory in the professional road cycling race, thus confirming the fourth place among active riders.

According to the statistical website procyclingstats.com, the German André Greipel is leading with 158 triumphs on the pro level, the second Briton Mark Cavendish has 155 and the third Spaniard Alejandro Valverde 132.

For comparison; Sagan (119) is followed by the fifth Italian Elia Viviani with 85 victories.

In the historical ranking is the first legendary Belgian Eddy Merckx with 287 victories, Sagan is the twentieth. Immediately in front of him are two other legends of world cycling – Frenchman Jacques Anquetil and Belgian Tom Boonen with 125 championships.
