Customer Angers at the Bentjok & Heru Hidayat Verdict Session

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia– Around 20 people on behalf of customers WanaArtha Life went berserk after the trial of the verdicts against the two defendants Heru Hidayat and Benny Tjokrosaputro in connection with the Jiwasraya Insurance corruption scandal.

Dozens of people immediately advanced to the pulpit while the trial was closed by the Chief Justice Rosmina, Monday (26/10/2020) night. Their anger was triggered by the verdict stating that the WanaArtha Life account related to Jiwasraya was still confiscated.

“Judgment of justice. There is no justice in the country,” shouted one of the customers.

They went after the judges, but failed because the judges had managed to leave the room first. The clerks were then targeted for their protests.

Shortly before, the owner and President Director of PT Hanson Internasional Tbk Benny Tjokrosaputro was sentenced to life imprisonment and paid Rp 6.078 trillion in compensation for state losses. At the same hearing, the President Commissioner of PT Trada Minera Tbk Heru Hidayat was also sentenced to life imprisonment and paid state compensation money worth Rp 10.72 trillion.

“To declare that Heru Hidayat is legally and convincingly proven to have committed a criminal act of corruption together and has committed a crime of money laundering,” said Chief Justice Rosmina at the Central Jakarta District Court, Monday (26/10/2020).

“If the defendant does not pay replacement money a month after the verdict, the prosecutor will confiscate the property and auction it off to cover the replacement money,” said Rosmina.

Heru was found guilty of violating Article 2 paragraph (1) in conjunction with Article 18 of Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning Eradication of Corruption Crimes, as amended and supplemented by Law Number 20 of 2001 concerning Amendments to Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning Eradication of Corruption in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) 1st of the Criminal Code.

In addition, Heru was also found guilty of violating Article 3 of Law Number 8 Year 2010 concerning the Prevention and Eradication of the Crime of Money Laundering.
