Curious, Is There Oxygen on Venus?

Jakarta

On a mission to find life on other planets, besides Marshis closest rival could be Venusas scientists began planning several missions to the next-door planet.

However, before deciding to go to Venus, the main question of this mission is the critical need to know the organic and chemical composition of the planet. Is there oxygen like Earth there?

The Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry, and Imaging aka DAVINCI mission, will launch to Venus in 2029 to find answers to these questions.

NASA says that by analyzing these groundbreaking VfOx measurements, scientists will for the first time identify what minerals are most stable in the Venusian surface highlands and link rock formation to their recent modified history.

What is VfOx?

Venus Oxygen Fugacity (VfOx) is being designed by undergraduate and graduate students for the DAVINCI mission to the Venusian atmosphere. Sensors will be installed on the outside of the Descent Sphere probe, which will measure the oxygen fugacity of the partial pressure of oxygen in the deep atmosphere beneath the Venusian clouds.

This spacecraft will enter Venus after two years of arriving in orbit Venus, ingests and analyzes atmospheric gases and collects images as they descend to the planet’s surface in the Alpha Region. The VFX will operate similarly to the oxygen sensor in many car engines, measuring the amount of oxygen in the fuel system relative to other fuel components.

“Understanding how much oxygen is contained in Venus’ atmosphere will be important in preparation for characterizing Venus-like worlds outside our Solar System with the James Webb Space Telescope and future observatories. How much oxygen Venus has in its deepest atmosphere will help scientists study this remote world,” said NASA quoted from its official website as seen Tuesday (7/6/2022).

DAVINCI . Mission

The DAVINCI mission will measure the composition of Venus’ atmosphere to understand how it formed and evolved, and determine whether the planet ever had an ocean. The mission aims to find the first clues to the possibility of life that once existed in Venus.

Venus and Earth are similar in size and density, so hypothetically, the two planets could be very similar. But at the same time, they are also very different. The spacecraft aims to look for signs of changes on the planet that could be replicated on Earth due to climate change.

DAVINCI as its name stands, will capture the world’s first high-resolution image detailing the geological features of Venus, which may be comparable to Earth’s continents, showing that Venus have plate tectonics. We can expect many interesting things from this mission.
