Cuban Athletes Granted Temporary Residence Visas in Chile: Lawyer

The lawyer for the Cuban athletes who left their delegation reported that the athletes already have their temporary residence visa.

This Friday it was reported that the Cuban athletes who left their delegation prior to the closing of the 2023 Pan American Games, They already have temporary residence visas in their hands.

Let us remember that yesterday it was announced by the Municipality of Lo Barnechea that the mayor of this commune invited the 10 athletes who left the team to train in the municipal gym.

After leaving the delegation, these athletes went out in search of asylum on Chilean soil, which was supported by parliamentarians from different parties.

During today’s training in Lo Barnechea, one of the Cuban athletes said that they made this decision mainly to “feel free.”

Meanwhile, Mijail Bonito, lawyer for the Cuban athletes, said that “yesterday, in the afternoon, we receive all provisional visastherefore, the placements are pending processing of refugee applications.”

“The institutions worked as they should, we are very grateful to the mayors, authorities who have supported this issue, who have made job offers,” said the jurist.

Bonito also highlighted “the professionalism and Chilean institutions, as it has worked, there was no problem. Everything was very friendly and fast. Therefore, we believe that it has been satisfactory and now we want to thank the Chilean people for their solidarity.”

“They are very happy with the reception they have had in the country and the shows of support that have been from different places,” said the lawyer.

The jurist also mentioned that “they all have temporary residence. The cases that we presented yesterday, yesterday afternoon we received all the temporary residence visas.”
