Cuba Celebrates World Voluntary Blood Donor Day: Recognizing the Contribution of Life-Saving Donors

Havana-. Cubans today celebrate a national day for World Voluntary Blood Donor Day, a program designed to save lives at the request of the World Health Organization (WHO), which thanks and recognizes the contribution of its protagonists.

Although Honduras was chosen as the host nation to celebrate that date tomorrow, instituted by the Pan American Health Organization, the island develops a valuable work, driven by the example and legacy of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, who in 1970, He extended his arm to donate blood when the events of the earthquake in Ancash, Peru.

As every year, June serves as a thank you to those men and women, who, with a high sense of altruism, offer their contribution to people in need.

Many in this country make their contribution to something that is fundamental in urgent treatments and interventions, allows to increase the hope and quality of life of patients with life-threatening diseases and to carry out complex medical and surgical procedures.

Sources from the Ministry of Public Health specify that since 2019 and to date, more than 1,200,000 surgeries have been performed in the country, more than 250,000 patients were transfused, and 237 transplants were performed, thanks to these blood donations.

In this way, the Maternal and Child Program is guaranteed as a top priority, all thanks to those blood, platelet and plasma donors who are committed to the health of their people.

According to figures from the Pan American Health Organization, approximately 118.5 million blood donations are made worldwide. 40 percent in high-income countries, where 16 percent of the world’s population lives.
