CS bauxite exports may be halted since 2014, observer: Only Jokowi is brave

Jakarta

The government has banned the export of bauxite ore as of June 2023. The export ban of this raw material is aimed at boosting downstream production.

Previously, the nickel export ban led to a lawsuit at the World Trade Organization (WTO). However, the government continues this policy.

Gadjah Mada University (UGM) energy economics observer Fahmy Radhi revealed that the ban on export of mining and mining products without downstreaming was to be implemented by 2014. At that time, many mining companies opposed it. Especially from Freeport which has also threatened to file a complaint with the WTO.

The government of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) at the time postponed the period of validity of the ban. “Only now, President Jokowi has the courage to ban the exports of nickel ore and bauxite,” he said in his statement, written on Saturday (12/24/2022).

The purpose of the ban issued by Jokowi is to increase value added, create new jobs and stimulate national economic growth.

Furthermore, the prohibition is also to optimize the results of natural wealth as much as possible for the prosperity of the people. This complies with the mandate in Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution.
