At the beginning of September, a first police raid took place at De Mesel after he had deposited 800,000 euros in various instalments into the account of his 21-year-old girlfriend Festa Nyamathira Njoroge, Nieuwsblad reports. De Mesel told his story on Youtube. „I was sitting in my house relax in my pajamas when four officers entered my house and arrested my pregnant girlfriend and me. They accused us of terrorist financing and money laundering.”

De Mesel also received the news that the account would be blocked for ten days. “But it was a gift. We have children together, she is pregnant. This was just a gift,” he says in the eight-minute video. “I don’t feel safe in Kenya anymore.”

But a few months later, De Mesel comes back in the sights of the police. This time because he deposited a large sum of money into another woman’s account. With that woman, Tebby Wambul Kago, De Mesel also had a child in July 2020. In addition, he would also have made another large deposit into Njoroge’s account.

Accounts frozen

In the meantime, the accounts were frozen by the judge because there were reasonable grounds to suspect that the money was obtained illegally. Njoroge recently appealed the earlier order to freeze her account. She says she has not been able to access her money for months now. The case will go to court at the end of January.
