Researchers have discovered the wreck of one of the ships that warned the Titanic of the presence of icebergs in the Irish Sea. The SS Mesaba sailed in the same area as the passenger ship deemed unsinkable in the spring of 1912, but the iceberg warning was not relayed to the bridge by the Titanic operator.

The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean. Of the more than 2,200 people aboard, more than 1,500 drowned. The Mesaba had warned the Titanic of drifting ice hours before the collision.

A few hundred wrecks

Mesaba itself was sunk by a German torpedo in 1918, during the First World War. Twenty people on board were killed.

The wreck of the merchant ship was known to lie in the sea between Ireland and Wales, but the exact location was unknown. Of highly advanced sonar technology the researchers scanned the seabed, finding 273 wrecks in an area of over 19,000 square kilometers. For more than a hundred now it has been established for the first time what ship is it.
