Cruel Employers Torture Workers in Singapore Sentenced to 10.5 Months in Prison

SINGAPORE, KOMPAS.com – Nuur Audadi Yusoff was sentenced to 10 months and 2 weeks imprisonment by the Court Singapore after being found guilty of repeatedly torturing his maid, one Indonesian workers ( TKI) named Sulis Setyowati.

The Straits Times reported that in the middle of this week, Sulis even had to secretly climb down from the balcony of a 15th floor apartment in the Yishun district, North Singapore, where she worked to escape Nuur’s atrocities.

Sulis was determined to take high risks after being tortured while working as Household assistant ( ART) from January to April 2018.

The beginning of Nuur’s atrocities began with spitting and slapping Sulis in the face.

The 24-year-old TKI had submitted a resignation which was rejected by Nuur. At that time, he promised not to persecute Sulis again.

Sulis also finally decided to stay because she needed a salary of 580 Singapore dollars (Rp. 6.1 million) per month to support her child in East Java.

But Nuur breaks his promise. Only 10 days later, he found his maid uploaded a photo of Nuur’s child on Facebook.

Outraged, Nuur slapped the face and hands of the poor TKI with a cellphone and then threw away the victim’s cellphone. As a result, Sulis’s face was covered with blood.

After that incident, Nuur’s cruelty only intensified. He confiscated Sulis’s cellphone and continued to slap, grab her hair, kick her head and hit her head with a broom and umbrella.

Employer The 31-year-old also called Sulis a prostitute and accused her of seducing her husband.

Judge Ronald Gwee said this sentence deserved to be handed down to Nuur as a warning that cruelty to domestic workers would not be tolerated in Singapore. Moreover, Sulis had to risk his life to save himself.

Nuur pleaded guilty to 6 criminal articles. He has also paid more than Singapore $ 7,000 (Rp7.4 million) in compensation to Sulis.
