The crucian carp is a fish species that occurs less and less in Flanders. You can only find it in five places in the wild. It is therefore a rather fussy fish. The crucian carp prefers to swim in clear, still water of good quality and with many plants nearby.
The Ypres-Comines canal seems to meet these conditions and that is why 19,000 crucian carp have now been released. The Provincial Fisheries Commission of West Flanders and the Nature and Forest Agency hope in this way to conserve the species. And in Ypres they like to see the fish come. It is proof for the city that the water quality in the canal is doing well.
