Create, leave, delete WhatsApp groups & more – simply explained

Create, use, leave, delete WhatsApp groups… There are numerous verbs that can be associated with the term “WhatsApp groups”. And behind each one is the question: “Uh, and how do I do that now?” Exactly such questions are discussed and answered in detail in this article – using the example of the Android version. On the whole, however, the procedure for the iOS version differs only slightly, so that the explanations are suitable for both Android and Apple users.

Create WhatsApp groups

Let’s start chronologically: It’s logical that a WhatsApp group must first be created before it can be used. All you have to do is select the three-point menu and then the “New group” tab. A window opens with your contacts. Here you select the contacts who should join the group. After selecting at least one contact and clicking the green arrow below, WhatsApp will prompt you in the next window to enter a group subject and optionally upload a group picture. You have already created a new WhatsApp group.

Invite members to the group

It is now possible to add more users to the WhatsApp group – since May 2022 over 500 people. There are two variants: First, you can click on the three-point menu and “Group info” in the group. Now you will find the text “Add participants” in the lower area.

Underneath, however, there is another lettering that is at least as interesting: “Invite with link”. Here, the name speaks for itself. In the next window, WhatsApp lets you create a link or QR code that anyone can use to join the WhatsApp group. Variant two is particularly easy, but it also harbors dangers. Anyone can forward the WhatsApp group link – hence anyone can join the WhatsApp group. If you don’t want this, you can reset the invite link in the same menu.

Decline invitations to WhatsApp groups

Now there is the other side of the coin. If you have a WhatsApp account, anyone can add you to a WhatsApp group – or you could. Since the end of 2019 there has been a function that you can use to block such invitations. This feature can be found in the settings under Account > Privacy > Groups. There you can choose whether everyone, your contacts or just certain people should have the right to add you to a WhatsApp group.

Another option is to leave the group and block the group admin. All you have to do is select “Account”, “Privacy” and then “Blocked Contacts” (Android) or “Blocked” (iOS) in the WhatsApp settings.

Your group admin rule

If you created the WhatsApp group yourself, you are considered the group admin. In this case, you have the option to change certain group settings in the Group Info window. In particular, you can specify here who can change the subject, the picture and the description of the group – either all participants or only admins. You can also choose whether everyone or only admins can send messages to the group. It is also possible to give or revoke group admin status to others – only the group founder is untouchable.

leave whatsapp group

Sometimes you grow apart and want to leave a WhatsApp group. This is also very easy if you know how to do it. To do this, you must first go to the alienated WhatsApp group and click on “Group info” again in the three-dot menu (you can also click on the group subject). The “Leave group” button can then be found in the lower area. In the next window you can then sign the divorce papers by clicking on “Leave” or simply mute the group.

If you leave a group, all participants will be informed. However, WhatsApp is already working on a quieter exit option.

Delete whatsapp group

You have now left the group, but it is still displayed to you. The solution is simple: delete. To do this, the group information must be called up again. Now there are only the buttons “Delete group” and “Report group”. However, caution is advised at this point, because in the next window the instant messaging service will ask you whether you also want to delete the media from this WhatsApp chat. Another click and the WhatsApp group is gone.
