Covid vaccines, still cuts in supplies. “But on Thursday we will exceed 500 thousand vaccinations per day” – Corriere.it

ROMA – You arrive with the dropper. The robust optimism of the will of the emergency commission collides with the pessimism of the reality of the sipped doses, which force several regions to slow down. AstraZeneca, as always, arrives late and with cuts announced at the last minute, but also Johnson & Johnsonit does not take off and gets less doses than expected in the depots. Despite this, the goal of 500,000 vaccines per day remains confirmed and, indeed, there is already a precise date and number: if all goes as planned, today we should exceed 400,000 doses per day, while on Thursday 29 April the number of inoculated vaccines will rise to 504,484. Health Minister Roberto Speranza is also optimistic: I am confident. Our numbers are aligned with the major EU countries. We are now in a position to accelerate. The goal of 500 thousand vaccines a day within our reach.

The incoming doses

Between tomorrow and May 5, 5 million doses are expected in Italy. The structure does not specify exactly the quantities and the origin, to avoid having to rectify during the race due to program changes, often imposed above all by AstraZeneca. According to the dates provided to the Regions, 2.2 million Pfizer doses will arrive on April 28, a good quantity, higher than expected. To see AstraZeneca, except for further program changes, it will be necessary to wait until May 3rd. And 1.8 million doses will arrive. Much less, and less than expected, Johnson & Johnson’s vaccines, which will be just 150,000. According to the existing contracts, 10 million from Astrazeneca, about twenty Pfizer, 7.3 from Johnson & Johnson, 7.3 from the new Curevac and 4.6 from Moderna should arrive between April and June.

Over 60

Not a few, if everything goes as it should, with more than one unknown, however, about the times. For AstraZeneca, for example, having a long booster at 12 weeks, the inoculations of the second doses will begin in May for those who have already had the first. Some Regions, like Lombardy, they would not have enough reminders if they continued with the first few doses of AstraZeneca. And, after all, there are several elements that slow down the Anglo-Swedish vaccine run. Apart from the narrow gauge quantities, there is still a recommendation to use it for the over 60s. And there is a fact that, in addition to fears for the very rare cases of side effects, it could decrease the demand: if for holidays in some places vaccination was necessary, since an interval of 12 weeks was foreseen, whoever obtained the first dose in the first days of May would have the second only in August.

Dose pocket by J&J

J&J has the same roof problem for under 60s, but it has a big advantage: single-dose. Lazio is waiting for the supply to increase, because the pharmacy channel has reserved this vaccine. But there are a thousand and, even assuming a minimum number of twenty vaccinations per day, 20,000 would be needed per day. And the Region is about to arrive only 15,000, less than the first supply. Still no news of Curevac, a new messenger RNA vaccine, of which a supply greater than that of Moderna is expected.

The objectives

The goal of the commissioner structure to close the vaccinations of over 60 by the end of June. At that point, one could think of using Astrazeneca and J&J even under the age of 60. The number of inoculated doses (in the week of April 16-22) reached 16,829,814. The percentage of over 80s who received at least one dose reached 81.21% while the total immunized reached 53.82%. Finally, the percentage of people aged between 70 and 79 who received the first dose also rose from 30.14 to 45.09, and the similar figure for RSA guests still increased, reaching 94.93%.
