Covid, the Barcelona hospital that takes patients out of intensive care to see the sea

The beauty of the sea per recover after Covid-19. A project of the Hospital de Mar in Barcelona is studying the impact of the sea breeze, the sun’s rays and the saltiness on the recovery of coronavirus patients. Cos Francisco Espaa, 60 years old and two months of intensive care behind him, he was able to leave the hospital and admire, warmed by the rays of the sun, the beach and the waves of the sea. It was the same for Isidre Correa, one of the first patients to be able to resume this recovery program at the beginning of June. The project ofHospital de Mar predicts, after a long stay in intensive care, short visits to the seafront to make the pace of recovery more human, but also the extension of visiting hours for patients and concerts in intensive care. The program had been suspended in the weeks of maximum crisis due to the raging of Covid-19, but restarted in June.

The doctor: It is important to keep emotions trained

After almost two months in the hospital, Francisco Espaa was able to admire the sea again. A small step, after being sedated for months, made possible thanks to the staff of the Hospital de Mar in Barcelona. Lying on a hospital bed, surrounded by the medical team that follows him, he was able to breathe the sea air for ten minutes, before returning to the ward. one of the best days I remember, he told the PA. Dr. Judith Marin said the recovery program had been going on for two years, before being interrupted by the arrival of the coronavirus in Spain, and in June, when the infections began to subside, it restarted. It is important to keep a patient’s emotions in shape and try to work with him in the early stages of recovery, the doctor added.

The story of Francisco Espaa

Espaa, whom friends call “Paco”, doesn’t remember much of his own 52 days in intensive care. They say that I have faced something really great – he adds -. I’m starting to realize now that I should be very happy. The Paco we greeted was very ill. He couldn’t speak and could barely breathe, says Xavi Matute, a longtime friend who was with Espaa when the ambulance took him to the hospital. The two, now that the worst is over, have been able to meet again (with all the necessary precautions). And the patient wanted to be updated on everything he missed in the 52 days of intensive care, including calcium. Real Madrid’s victory in the Spanish Liga, Barcelona’s defeat in the Champions League, and of course telenovela by Leo Messi, which kept all the fans of the champion in suspense until a few days ago. Small steps to return, little by little, to normalcy.
