COVID-19 Vaccination for Immunocompromised Patients: Additional Shots and Procedures

When an extra corona shot?

Of Manual for COVID-19 vaccination of immunocompromised patients(external link) states which and how many vaccinations are indicated in immunocompromised patients and what the procedure should be followed.

One (annual) dose of a COVID-19 vaccine is sufficient for most people in the risk groups. Some adults and children in the medically high-risk group remain at increased risk of a serious course of COVID-19 despite vaccination. They may benefit from a corona vaccination more than once a year.

Due to an underlying disease or medication, it is possible that patients with a medically high risk build up an immune response to a lesser extent after vaccination. Also, in immunocompromised patients, the duration of protection may be shorter than in individuals without an immune disorder.

How can my patient get the corona shot?

As the treating physician, you must indicate the indication for an additional vaccination or revaccination and refer the individual patient with a medically high risk with a referral letter to the GGD Municipal Health Service (Municipal Health Service).

There is a sample referral letter with the hospital umbrella organizations NVZ Dutch Association of Hospitals (Dutch Association of Hospitals) and NFU Dutch Federation of University Medical Centers (Dutch Federation of University Medical Centers), NVK Dutch Association for Pediatrics (Dutch Association for Pediatrics), FMS and working group ‘COVID-19 vaccination of immunocompromised patients’ shared. This referral letter contains information about the number of injections to be administered at a vaccination time to be determined by you.
