A septuagenarian died from the coronavirus on Saturday in the Seattle area (United States), the second death linked to the disease in the United States, while a first case was confirmed in New York.

The patient died at Evergreen Health Hospital in Kirkland, a suburb of Seattle, where the first death in the United States was confirmed on Saturday, that of a man in his 50s.

The septuagenarian is one of four new cases announced Sunday by the King County health agency, where the city of Seattle is located, in the far northwest of the country.

The three other patients, a septuagenarian, an octogenarian and a nonagenarian, all of whom had health problems before contracting the virus, are in critical condition.

The four new cases bring the number of patients diagnosed in King County to ten, the agency said on Sunday, which will brief on Monday.

Several of these cases have no known link to someone who has stayed abroad in an area affected by the virus, suggesting that the coronavirus is currently spreading among the American population.

Also on Sunday, New York State authorities revealed that a first case had been officially diagnosed in New York, a woman in her thirties who recently stayed in Iran.

The patient, who suffers from breathing difficulties, but whose condition is not considered serious, is currently confined to her home.

“We’ve said from the start that it is only a matter of time before a case of the coronavirus is identified in New York,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement.

“There is no reason to put yourself in a state of undue anxiety,” urged New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo. “The overall risk remains low in New York.”

Other confirmed cases were announced Sunday in Rhode Island (1) and Florida (2).

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) did not release updated data on Sunday, after announcing on Saturday that 22 confirmed cases had been identified in the United States.

To this figure were added 47 patients repatriated to the United States.

If the number of cases still remains low in the United States, criticism is mounting to denounce the apparent logistical unpreparedness of the American authorities, who have in particular officially tested, to date, only 472 people, according to the CDC.

Several experts regretted the slowness of the health authorities in distributing coronavirus screening kits.

According to Vice President Mike Pence, appointed by Donald Trump to lead the crisis management team, more than 15,000 of these kits have been on the market this weekend and the government is working with a supplier to produce 50,000 more.

On Saturday, President Donald Trump defended his management of the coronavirus in the United States, congratulating himself in particular for having banned very early (February 2) entry into the United States to people who had stayed in China during the previous two weeks.

Mike Pence announced the same arrangement for Iran on Saturday and advised US nationals not to travel to the worst-affected areas of Italy and South Korea.

The White House has asked Congress for $ 2.5 billion in funding to tackle the epidemic, but the Democratic opposition believes much more is needed, calling for $ 8.5 billion.
