COVID-19: Ombudsman’s Office urges the Ministry of Health to change policies due to low vaccination

The Ombudsman warned of a drop in the rate of vaccination against COVID-19 and urged the Ministry of Health to change from strategy for the population to receive the corresponding doses. At a press conference, they stressed that they have also been alerted to a possible dose expiration; however, they have not received official information.

“The Ombudsman has requested information from Cenares so that it gives us detailed information, unfortunately we have not received an explanation of what the situation of the vaccines is and that is why we are asking for transparency in the proposals and approaches that we are making,” said Alicia Abanto , attached to the State Administration of the entity.

Abanto also warned that 52.56% of people over 18 years of age has not received the third dose of the vaccines. In this regard, they called on the Ministry of Education to change the requirements for workers in educational centers, they also asked that the third dose be a requirement for these people.

“This situation places the lives and health of millions of Peruvians at serious risk, violating the constitutional obligations of the State in this matter. In this sense, the Government cannot lose sight of the fact that the vaccination process constitutes the best strategy to prevent death and the severe damage that can be caused by COVID-19“, they pointed out.

Minsa acknowledges slowdown

Recently, the Minister of Health, Hernan Condoriconfirmed that the rhythm of the vaccination process against COVID-19 has slowed down, since, in his opinion, society does not perceive the emergency situation that the country was experiencing at other times.

“It is very easy to vaccinate when there were many deaths and people came, even the vaccines were 24 hours (a day) and there were queues. Today, since they do not see (the risk), it is already a little bit on our part as citizens ” , he told the media during a visit to the La Libertad region.

In addition, he asked the population to continue going to health centers so that, “later”, they can eliminate the mandatory use of the mask and be able to hug “friends and family”. “Here the frontal fight is all of us,” she asserted.

Condori thus explained the cause of the decrease in the number of vaccines administered in recent weeks, a phenomenon also confirmed this Tuesday by the director of Immunizations of the Ministry of HealthMaría Elena Martínez, who agreed with Condori in saying that the process is not advancing on a large scale because the population is not going to the vaccination points.

“Before the first and second waves, the perception of the population was to go en masse to health facilities. Today we see another scenario in a third wave, where there has been a decrease in cases and the cases that occurred (were) very mild I consider that there is a co-responsibility between us and the population,” Martínez told RPP.
