COVID-19: Argentina aborted football season and stopped relegation
Buenos Aires: The remainder of the Argentine football season has been canceled amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that has so far killed more than 200,000 people worldwide.
–
The first-class clubs, known as the Argentine Superliga, will be exempt from landing until 2022 due to the turmoil caused by the health crisis.
–
“We are finishing the championships,” the president of the Argentine Football Association, Claudio Tapia, was quoted by Xinhua news agency as saying.
–
“The idea is to start playing again when the authorities allow this and with the utmost safety.”
–
Tapia said that the announcement will be made officially on Tuesday, adding that the teams from the lower divisions will be upgraded.
–
His comments came two days after Argentine President Alberto Fernandez extended the national closure until May 10.
–
The AFA decision means that the Superliga Cup, which was due to end in May, was thwarted after only one round.
–
Boca Juniors achieved their 34th Argentine title in the First Division last month after a late blow from Carlos Tevez that gave him a 1-0 victory over Gymnasia at the end of the last weekend of the Premier League season.
