Covid-19: “A worthy funeral”. Ecuadorian city buries dead people in cardboard coffins

“We thank the Association of Papermakers for their first contribution with 200 cardboard coffins”, the municipality published on its Twitter account, estimating that 2000 corrugated cardboard coffins will be needed to provide “a dignified funeral” to all mortal victims of pandemic.

In a statement, the City Council of Guayaquil highlights the “solidarity gesture”, adding that corrugated cardboard coffins will contribute to “giving a dignified grave to people who died during the health emergency”.

The coffins will be distributed to the city’s two main cemeteries and police forces.

In recent days, relatives of the victims have publicly complained about the difficulty in obtaining traditional wooden coffins.

The province where Guayaquil is located has 1,648 of the 3,465 cases of contamination in Ecuador. The number of fatalities in Guayaquil is 122.

After appearing in China in December, the Covid-19 outbreak spread across the world, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a pandemic.

In Portugal, where the first confirmed cases were registered on March 2, the latest report from the Directorate-General for Health indicated 10,524 confirmed infections. Of this universe of patients, 266 died, 1,075 are admitted to hospitals, 75 recovered and the rest recover at home or in other institutions.
