According to a study conducted by the Italian hospital center San Raffaele, the majority of patients affected by the new coronavirus are at risk of suffering from a psychiatric disorder.
A high risk of psychiatric repercussions
Anxiety, post-traumatic stress or even depression … 55% of former patients with Covid-19 suffer from psychiatric disorder, according to the study conducted by the Italian hospital center San Raffaele. The researchers in fact followed the clinical development of 402 former patients, including 265 men and 137 women.
In details, 42% developed a anxiety, 40% a insomnia, 31% a depression and 28% a post-traumatic stress. According to cnews.fr, 20% of respondents say they are victims of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
“It is clear that the inflammation caused by the disease could have repercussions at the psychiatric level“said the professor Francesco Benedetti, group leader of the psychiatry and psychobiology research unit at San Raffaele Hospital (Milan), in a statement.

The higher male death rate
According to the study, published in the scientific journal Brain, Behavior and Immunity, men who have contracted coronavirus are more likely to die than women. However, they are more likely to suffer from one of these disorders.
Researchers explain these consequences by the stigmatization of patients, social isolation or the fear of infecting those close to them. They thus advise the former patients to make a mental health checkup.
