“Could get the curve in Germany”

There is only one topic left. In Germany, in the world, in politics and society. And on talk shows. The corona crisis. And so Maybrit Illner spoke with her guests on Thursday – and without an audience – on the question “Whatever it costs – will we win the fight against the virus?”

The guests at Maybrit Illner

Hubertus Heil (SPD): The Federal Minister of Labor and Social Affairs says: “The most important thing is health. After that come social security and jobs. ”

Susanne Johna: The Pandemic officer of the German Medical Association demands: “The focus must be on patient care, which has been far too often in the past few years on the commercialization of the healthcare system.”

Christian Drosten: The institute director of virology at the Charité Berlin gives hope – at least to the Germans. “We could get the curve in Germany and not in other countries,” says the virologist who advises the federal government.

Kristin Shi copper: The Sinologist and political scientist interprets the alleged positive news from China as a distraction from domestic problems. “The Chinese government has an initial debt to manage, also towards its own population,” says the China expert.

Eckart von Hirschhausen: The doctor, moderator and author does not visit his father on his 85th birthday. “It hurts, but it has to be.”

This was discussed

It was not even discussed how this has now become established in the corona talk shows. Instead, Illner alternately asked her guests about their assessment of the current situation and possible developments, and they answered in a calm but determined tone.

Everyone agreed: Chancellor Angela Merkel’s TV address was correct and important, hopefully there would be no need for a curfew, but the selfish behavior of some might make it inevitable. “When you drive through Berlin, you see a lot of people walking around with whom you think they are not going to work,” said Drosten.

The star of the evening

The man of the hour was Christian Drosten, and he has been for a few hours now. The virologist and now probably the greatest medical superstar since George Clooney in “Emergency Room” knows how to convey his facts in a very likeable sobriety – including the unsettling ones.

When asked, for example, how long the public and private restrictions would have to remain, he replied: “There are model calculations that say: two years. But that’s not going to last. ”

But Drosten also often emphasized the time advantage that Germany still has. “We are very early in recognizing in Germany. That doesn’t mean we don’t have to do anything. We absolutely have to, ”said the virologist. “We could get the curve in Germany and not in other countries.”

Corona or flu? How do I know if I could be affected?

A moment to smile

Nothing is really funny on this topic, of course. But at Drosten fans, a dialogue could at least have made for a smile.

Illner addressed the current warnings from northern Italy to other countries and then turned to Drosten: “You were already on the program six weeks ago and said: This will be bad.”

Drosten, in the usual lack of emotion: “Yes.”

As I said: something for lovers.

The quote of the evening

On the search for medicines and vaccines against the corona virus, Drosten said: “Science is feverishly involved.”

Conclusion

These days we all have to do without. Talk shows are also avoided. On audience. And on an argument. There can also be no factual information broadcasts in times of crisis. But if at some point hopefully everything is over, we can learn to argue again.
