Corsa and Covid-19, Signorelli: “Beware of chatter …”

“Tennis has also been banned indoors. Yet the distance there is really a lot. It is more risky to take the elevator with other people”, explains the hygienist to Gazzetta Active

The outdoor running it is one of the few sporting activities currently still permitted. The risks of contagion from Covid-19, however, are not eliminated. Already on the occasion of the first wave of coronavirus we talked about how it is possible to limit the danger. What are the actual risks? And what are the measures to take? “The advice given for everyday life is also valid for those who practice sports. The rules of distance and good sanitation standards, including the hand washing, they represent rules that are also valid during sports activities ”, underlines Professor to Gazzetta Active Carlo Signorelli, full professor of Hygiene and Public Health of the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University of Milan.

During the race the distance must be increased, is this correct?
“Definitely: the concept of distance between two people standing still is different from that between two people on the move. When standing one meter, one and a half meters away is enough. But if you move the droplets, the droplets, have a greater chance of reaching the other and eventually infecting him. For this reason it is very important to keep a greater distance when running. While carrying out a sporting activity the minimum distance is two meters. Moreover, it costs nothing to increase the distance. We will talk a little less. But the problem is just that: talking increases the emission of droplets, that can transmit the contagion “.

Does the fact that you are outdoors really lower the risks of contracting Covid-19?
“Outdoors the risks are generally lower (HERE the parks of Milan suitable for runners), unless it is contact sports. The risks are however not eliminated. There are a number of studies that say that in general when physical exertion is made, the body’s ability to react to immune stimuli is reduced. Hence a greater propensity to become infected in those who carry out intense physical activities would emerge. These are actually things already said, which should be known. Yet sometimes it doesn’t seem like that, looking around ”.

Are there any risks by making small common gestures such as touching the front door?
“Those are possible risks: they cannot be excluded but they are very low. With normal hygiene rules, such as hand washing, they are effectively reset. The important thing is to wash your hands carefully before and after exercising “.

Tennis was banned if played indoors. Was it a necessary measure from a scientific point of view?
“It has no great scientific logic: it is not a contact sport, the players are at a great distance from each other and it is not clear what specific risk there is with the locker rooms closed. It is true that the environment is technically closed, but with volumes of air that unite it to an external environment in terms of dilution of the virus in the air. On these points it was hoped for a benevolent interpretation by the Ministry which instead reiterated that tensostatic balls and tennis courts with pressostatic covers are to be equated with an indoor venue “.

Is it riskier to play tennis indoors or take the elevator with other people?
“Without a doubt, take the elevator with other people”.
