Coronavirus: wearing a mandatory mask in Iran next week

Iranian President Hassan Rohani announced on Sunday that the mask will be made compulsory in certain public places from next week while the provinces most affected by the Covid-19 epidemic have been authorized to reinstate restrictions .

The country most affected in the Middle East by the pandemic, Iran has never decreed compulsory containment. Public events, non-essential businesses and schools were canceled or closed in March, but the government began to lift these restrictions in April, regularly calling on people to wear a mask in public.

The wearing of the mask will be made “compulsory in covered spaces where there are groupings,” said Rohani at a meeting of the National Committee to fight the pandemic broadcast on television. The measure will take effect from next Saturday, the beginning of the week in Iran, and will have to be applied until July 22. It can be extended if necessary.

The Ministry of Health has prepared a list of places of risky assembly, added Rohani, without giving details of possible sanctions in case of non-compliance with the measure. According to Deputy Minister of Health Iraj Harirchi, “services will not be provided” to those who do not wear masks in places such as “government offices and shopping malls”.

As a reminder, Iran, which officially listed its first cases of Covid-19 last February, recorded more than 10,000 deaths out of a total of more than 220,000 cases of infection.
