Coronavirus, the EU buys new doses of Remdesivir after the alarm on stocks

08 October 2020 09:54

The first tranche will be sent to the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Greece, Austria, Denmark and Slovenia, countries that have declared their absence

The treatments are in addition to the 30 thousand already bought in July for the treatment of patients with severe symptoms. Remdesivir is the only medicine authorized in the EU for the treatment of Covid-19 patients who need oxygen.

36 countries are participating in the joint tender, all EU countries, the European economic area, Great Britain and six candidate countries. Everyone can now directly source the drug Veklury, the brand name of Remdesivir. The Commission had already signed such a contract with Gilead last summer to secure 33,380 Veklury treatment courses, spread across the EU and Britain since August.

“Remdesivir is running out,” Dutch Health Ministry spokesman Martijn Janssen said just two days ago, adding that new supplies are expected. And so the first tranche of the new doses will be sent to Holland, as well as to the Czech Republic, Greece, Austria, Denmark and Slovenia, the countries that at this moment have declared the lack of stocks.
