Coronavirus, record of infections in France since the lockdown: 4,897

Coronavirus around the world Meanwhile, even at a global level, the pandemic does not seem to want to slow down: at least 805,470 have died worldwide according to an AFP report. The United States still remains the hardest hit, with at least 176,371 deaths. Brazil (114,250), Mexico (60,254) and India (56,706) follow. The curve of the latter country is particularly worrying: the second most populous nation has passed the threshold of three million infected people. And after largely keeping its outbreak under control, South Korea has also returned to restrictions to contain a new emergency. Night clubs, karaoke bars and beaches have been closed, there are strict posts on religious gatherings and services, and face masks are mandatory in public areas of Seoul.

The case of schools: open in GB, Germany and France Losing school for children and young people does more damage than coronavirus: they are convinced of it in the United Kingdom, where the words of the government’s chief health advisor, Chris Whitty, are now reinforcing the position of Prime Minister Boris Johnson. In his opinion, the chances of children dying from Covid-19 are “extremely low” in the face of the “damage” caused to childhood by prolonged absence from school. These affirmations – while in many European countries we are confronted with the puzzle of the reopening and related risks – supported by a study by the British government agency Public Health England. According to the researchers, in England, infections in primary schools have been very rare, and since the reopening of the classrooms in June there have been only 70 children and 128 teachers and school staff, equal to 0.01% of the total. Conclusions: “It is easier for children to catch the virus at home than at school”.

And if Germany has already reopened schools, the same line seems to want to be followed in France too. Last week Snuipp, the main union of elementary teachers, asked for a postponement of the beginning of the year to allow teachers to prepare, but the Minister of Education Jean-Michel Blanquer has ruled out this hypothesis in recent days. The beginning of the school year will take place “for all on September 1”, he reiterated.
