Coronavirus: Quirós warned of a possible increase in cases in April, but not serious due to vaccines | The Buenos Aires Minister of Health maintained that continuing vaccination, and using chinstraps in closed places are the keys

The Buenos Aires Minister of Health, Fernán Quirós, said this morning that “could it be that in April or May there is an increase in cases” of coronavirus, but assured that an increase in hospitalizations and deaths will not be generated “at least with the variants known so far” thanks “to the level of immunological protection that society has“. A kind of recognition of the implementation of the national government’s vaccination campaign, from the sending of planes to import millions of doses of Sputnik V, to the negotiations with the different laboratories to reaching agreements for AstraZeneca, Sinopharm, Pfizer , and local production, efforts that were questioned by the anti-vaccines and hard sectors of the opposition.

“After this last wave that we went through and with the percentage of vaccination that we have reached, the immune level that the community has is important and it avoids or severely decreases, at least up to the variants that we know until today, the possibility that those infected pass to be seriously ill,” said Quirós during the press conference he gives every week on the epidemiological situation.

The Buenos Aires minister indicated that “we may have a new wave of cases, it could be an increase in infections in April or May” but pointed out that it is likely that this increase will not generate serious illnesses or deaths in the same proportion.

“We are in a transition from what was a pandemic to an endemic, the names are not as important as the concept,” he said, describing that what has happened so far, the increases in cases followed by hospitalizations and deaths in a certain proportion, is likely to no longer occur or occur on a much smaller scale.

On the other hand, he said that to respond to the increase in infections “we must continue to focus on the two instruments we have: complete vaccinations and use masks in closed spaces, especially when we are there for a long time, it is poorly ventilated or there are many people” .

He also insisted on the importance of applying the National Calendar vaccines, especially to girls and boys of school age.

In relation to a fourth dose, Quirós stated that “the reinforcement is being applied to people whose primary scheme was three doses (over 50 with double Sinopharm and immunocompromised people)”.

At that point, he clarified that “to date the national government and the National Immunization Commission have not recommended when the second reinforcement would be, that is, the fourth dose for those who have two of the initial scheme and the fifth for those who have three of initial outline”.

“We are still with a very good coverage of the reinforcements,” he insisted. Regarding the new variants, he pointed out that “we must be attentive to those that have the capacity to increase contagion or escape immunity” and described that “we are alert to see what happens with the Omicron BA.2 variant because in some countries contagion has increased.

The city of Buenos Aires currently has between 300 and 400 new cases per day on average; 95% of the population of Buenos Aires received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine; 91% the second dose; and 63% the booster dose.
