Coronavirus, Prime Minister Conte will ask for an extension of the state of emergency

Until October 31 – Through the parliamentary passage, therefore, Conte will report on the epidemiological situation in the country and on the need to prolong the state of emergency, which currently expires at the end of the month, until 31 October. A necessity, as sources close to the executive have always explained, given by technical reasons: to guarantee, that is, greater speed of execution in case of need.

Majority Agree – The decision to report back to plenary was taken by the prime minister and the heads of delegations of the majority before the Council of Ministers called to deliberate on the request for a further budget variance. The choice, however, not to put the Houses before the fait accompli has institutional but also political reasons. Within the majority, in fact, there are different positions even if a substantial agreement was found on October 31st as the date on which to extend the emergency. Guidance shared also by Italia Viva, which even so far had sided against the hypothesis of prolonging the exceptional state.

Oppositions to the contrary – The opinion of the oppositions is very different. The leader of the League, Matteo Salvini, announced “barricades”: “There is no ongoing health emergency and anyone who wants to extend the state of emergency is an enemy of Italy. We do not let them leave the classroom, we they are closed to them, the Italians deserve breath and freedom, “said the former interior minister. Forza Italia, through the group leader in the Chamber Mariastella Gelmini, has made it known that it will not accept an extension until 31 December and that it will demand Parliament’s involvement by the government.

Sileri: “No al lockdown” – “Prolonging the state of emergency does not mean lockdown, it does not mean anything dramatic,” explained the deputy minister of health Pierpaolo Sileri, of the M5s. It is only, he added, a “tool” capable of giving “greater flexibility” to the executive’s action: “But nothing changes compared to what we are doing today, that is, a recovery of almost total normality”.
