In the USA, the number of new infections is increasing dramatically. The situation in New York City is particularly dire. The governor wants to block parts of the city completely. WELT reporter Steffen Schwarzkopf reports from Washington.

The city represents five percent of all infections worldwide. There were more than 5,000 new cases in just 24 hours. According to politicians, “arrogant” and “callous” citizens are also to blame.

Aexit lock? Times Square and Broadway have been emptier and quieter since New York asked its citizens to stay at home two days ago – but whoever strolled through the parks of the metropolis on this warm weekend saw groups playing basketball or picnic everywhere. Many people here, it seems, are still not taking the novel coronavirus seriously.

That could be one reason why the pathogen is spreading rapidly in the city of New York and the state of the same name. On Sunday, Governor Andrew Cuomo presented a dramatic statistic. Accordingly, about five percent of all coronavirus cases in the world are now in New York.

The number rose to almost 16,000, over 5,000 more than on Saturday. 114 people have died of Covid-19 so far. About 13 percent of those who tested positive for the virus went to the hospital. Overall, the USA is now in third place worldwide with more than 32,000 infections, behind China and Italy.

9,000 people were infected in New York City alone, almost 30 percent of all cases in America. The densely populated metropolis has become the center of the crisis.

“We are on the threshold of 10,000 cases,” said New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, speaking of a shocking number in the “epicenter” of the corona pandemic in the USA. He warned of a “new reality” that would last for weeks or months.

Citizens do not obey the rules

Why is the situation there developing so dramatically? On the one hand, say experts, because the virus is now being tested much more frequently than it was a few days ago. And secondly, because many citizens did not adhere to the curfew.

Cuomo therefore gave the city 24 hours to find a way to keep people from larger gatherings in parks. “I wonder why people don’t understand that they should stay home,” he said angrily. The governor called the behavior of some New Yorkers “arrogant” and “callous”. He suggested blocking roads to give people more space outdoors.

Since this weekend, only what is considered to be indispensable is open in New York. Pharmacies, supermarkets and banks, for example. The consequences for the economy can already be felt. So many New Yorkers filed for unemployment benefits that week that the agency’s website crashed.

An average of 250,000 people logged in every day – five times as many as usual. In addition, the office recorded 160,000 calls, on normal days there are around 10,000. The situation in the rest of the country is also becoming more dramatic. Some economists believe that five million Americans could lose their jobs in April.

“We will take care of the unemployed,” said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. “But first we have to defeat the virus.” The city is apparently not well equipped for this. Four temporary hospitals with a total of 1,000 beds are now to be built quickly in Manhattan.

In addition, the ship Comfort, a floating hospital of the US Navy, is to make its way to New York. De Blasio feels abandoned by the government in Washington. President Donald Trump, he said, was far from New York. “And he won’t lift a finger,” added the mayor, “to help his hometown.”
