Coronavirus.- López Obrador rules out curfews and authoritarian measures to stop the pandemic

MADRID, 29 (EUROPA PRESS)

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on Tuesday has ruled out curfews and authoritarian measures to contain the advance of the new coronavirus pandemic, since the Mexican people are “responsible” and “limit themselves.”

“It is not necessary to be insisting a lot that the measures must be complied with. Much less authoritarianism, curfews and prohibitions,” said the president during his daily appearance from the National Palace.

López Obrador’s words contrast with the measures that some mayors and local authorities have had to impose in their regions and municipalities since the state of emergency began, after its inhabitants had not followed the rules.

Although curfews and even the prohibition of the sale of alcoholic beverages have been imposed in some places, in others such as the capital of the state of Guerrero, Chilpancingo, economic activity and traffic have not stopped and the mandatory quarantine decreed by the Government.

The Ministry of Health, explained the newspaper “El Universal”, has confirmed that more than half of the population of Guerrero, in southern Mexico, continues “on the move.” Local authorities have confirmed that in the last fifteen days the contagion figures have risen from 49 to 210.

Despite these data, the Mexican president has insisted on the responsibility of the Mexican people, who, he said, has given “an example to everyone” of how things can be done without the authorities having to fall for it. authoritarianism.

In its latest balance of cases, the Government of Mexico has confirmed 16,752 infections by Covid-19 and 1,569 fatalities.
