Coronavirus in Navarra: – Diario de Noticias de Navarra

The latest epidemiological report, prepared by the Institute of Public and Labor Health of Navarra (ISPLN), again underlines the efficacy of the vaccine as a prevention tool against COVID-19. Thus, it stands out that, due to the direct effect of the vaccine, 12,300 symptomatic infections, 2,700 hospital admissions, 300 ICU admissions and 1,100 deaths from this cause have been avoided. Although all age groups older than 15 years have rates below 100 cases per 100,000, in those aged 5 to 14 the rate is 114 per 100,000 and in children under 5 years old, 103 per 100,000.

So far in the fifth wave, vaccination has prevented 43% of symptomatic cases, 82% of hospitalizations, 76% of ICU admissions and 95% of deaths.

Compared to the previous week, changes are observed without a well-defined trend in the number of hospital admissions for COVID-19, which go from 16 to 26, in ICU admissions, which go from 3 to 5, and in the number of deaths, which drops from 6 to 2. As a large part of the young population is vaccinated, the average age of hospitalized cases has risen to 70 years.

However, today hospitalization in Navarre centers continues, especially in the intensive units, where, until 24 hours on Tuesday, a total of 15 people, whose average age was 50.3 years. On the ward, 46 patients remained hospitalized, with a mean age of 67.2 years.

It should be remembered that Navarra continues to be one more week and since September 17, 2020, the autonomous community that carries out the most diagnostic tests for COVID-19 in relation to its population: 1,716.33 per thousand inhabitants, according to the official statistics of the Ministry of Health. The state average stands at 1,207.84 per thousand inhabitants.

90% effectiveness in preventing admissions and deaths

The average effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in Navarra is estimated at 62% with one dose and 73% with a complete schedule to prevent symptomatic cases, and 80% with one dose and 92% with complete vaccination to prevent hospital admissions for the virus. The effectiveness of complete vaccination to prevent ICU admissions and deaths exceeds 90%.

The effectiveness of vaccines to prevent all infections, including asymptomatic ones, is somewhat lower: 55% with partial vaccination and 69% with complete regimen. For this reason, Public Health insists that vaccinated people maintain complementary preventive measures so as not to become infected and not to spread. The protection of the vaccine is not achieved until 14 days after completing the regimen, so the relaxation of preventive measures after receiving the first dose can counteract the protection provided by the vaccine.

Since the beginning of vaccination in Navarra, it is estimated that more than 12,300 symptomatic infections, 2,700 hospital admissions, 300 ICU admissions and 1,100 deaths from COVID-19 have been prevented by the direct effect of the vaccine. To this impact must be added the indirect effect of reducing the circulation of coronavirus due to the immunity of the population.

In this fifth wave, vaccination has prevented 43% of symptomatic cases, 82% of hospitalizations, 76% of ICU admissions, and 95% of deaths from COVID-19. In the absence of vaccination, the fifth pandemic wave would have had a considerably greater impact in Navarra and much more drastic preventive measures would have been necessary to reduce social interaction and mobility.

33% decrease in incidence

In the Autonomous Community, until yesterday, a total of 962,736 doses have been administered and 504,709 people have the complete vaccination schedule. The percentage of people with a complete schedule is 86.8% of the vaccinable population (over 12 years of age) and 76.4% of the total population. Thus, and largely due to the effectiveness of the vaccines, in the week of September 6 to 12, 387 cases were confirmed by PCR or antigen (59 per 100,000 inhabitants), which represents a 33% decrease compared to the previous week, in which 589 cases were reported by PCR or by antigen (89 per 100,000 inhabitants).

The incidence decreases in all age groups, with the decreases being more pronounced in the 15 to 34 age groups. All age groups older than 15 years have rates below 100 cases per 100,000. In those between 5 and 14 years old, the rate is 114 per 100,000 and in children under 5 years old, 103 per 100,000.

Cases of transmission at home account for 47% of the infections, the social environment for 11% of the cases, and the cases that do not know the origin of the infection are 27%. The workplace has been associated with 3.1% of cases, the school with 3.4% and the socio-health environment with 9%.

The Delta variant is responsible for 99% of cases and is associated with a greater probability of admission to hospital and ICU, with greater transmissibility in the young population, and a certain degree of evasion from the effect of the vaccine.
