Coronavirus in Italy. The rise in new infections is high again

Nine people died last 24 hours in Italy from COVID-19, and 947 new coronavirus infections were also confirmed, which is over 100 more than the day before, the health ministry said on Friday (August 21). The total balance of the dead rose to 35,427.

Since the beginning of the epidemic, 257,000 cases of SARS-CoV-2 have been detected in the country.

Almost 205,000 people are cured. Currently, over 16.6 thousand are infected.

The number of hospitalized people rose to 919; 69 patients are staying in intensive care units.

174 new infections were detected in Lombardy, and six people died from Covid-19. The number of deaths in this region has risen to 16,852 since the outbreak began.

One death and 137 cases of infection have been registered in the Lazio capital region.

One person has died in Veneto, and there are 116 more cases.

The chairman of the authorities in Sardinia, Christian Solinas, assured that it was not a “host island”. This is how he referred to the numerous detected coronavirus infections among tourists returning from there from holidays.

“All cases are imported or involve people returning to the island from zones where there are well known hot spots,” Solinas said.

“The people of Sardinia have made great sacrifices. We have reached a zero infection situation, and now we are seeing a renewed increase in infection, caused by the possibility of uncontrolled movement, which the government has unfortunately agreed to,” stressed the governor of the island.

Experts at the medical research foundation Gimbe, monitoring the course of the epidemic across the country, said the number of new infections increased by 140 percent in the last month compared to the previous period.
