The US state of Florida is a new focus of the coronavirus pandemic. At the beginning of July, the state registered over 15,000 new infections in one day. That even exceeds the numbers from New York. Emigrant Alexander Stöhr, who has lived in Miami for years, speaks to him in an interview stern about the current situation on site.
“Quarantine is currently the order of the day because my partner may have corona. The problem is, however, there is already the first problem that you took the test ten days ago. There is still no result. Do you have the feeling that me when I am people, I run with my dog, people with masks, you got me, people stick to it and don’t really know where it comes from, but we were another example of these large numbers, high numbers on the west coast of Florida. Just four weeks ago you had the feeling that nobody really stuck to it. So I was in a supermarket and put on a mask. You looked at the cashier behind the counter, and of course she didn’t have a mask Then you realized correctly that the people who work there are in the restaurant, that they don’t want to do that, because the employer prescribes it, but they don’t think much of it. In my opinion, it’s political, first of all line here in the US or Florida.
Everything else follows. People believe and go out and go to the beaches until you say again More people, you can’t. All beaches closed again. These big numbers are, of course, the aftershock of a month or two, which we fully disclose. I say that it feels like nothing is being tried here under control. You talk a lot. There is a press conference from the White House every day, felt every day. The experts give an opinion and say We do it, we should do it, stick to it!
Politics doesn’t do anything. One has the feeling that chaotic circumstances contribute to the fact that it simply runs completely off the track here. And then you have New York. That’s where we do the job. Do you know what to do? For example Florida or Arizona? They don’t have masks, bad. They say nothing, they do not follow the instructions of the experts. They just don’t do anything. They are standing next to him now and say that I think it’s wrong that we now tell people that they have to wear a mask. In my opinion, that’s complete nonsense. In Germany, for example, everyone is on the same page. You have a few who are against it. But in general, politics is a role model. They all pull together, and that’s how people know: All right. They do it. Then we do it here too. The president refuses to leave the house with a mask, and so does the vice president. If they are not role models for the general population, then it cannot work at all. “
And what does the Berliner think when he looks back on Germany?
“I have to say a bit jealous, because it just seems to work in Germany. I have the feeling personally, and I tell a lot of friends here. They see it in the news. In Europe it works now.
Germany, Italy, Spain, France. These people, these countries were badly affected. In March and April people did not even think ahead that they could soon be like these countries. The countries have just gotten it better under control. I’m a little jealous.
