Coronavirus in Brazil. Over 14,000 new cases

In the past 24 hours, Brazil has seen 14,318 new confirmed cases of coronavirus, 335 people have died, the country’s health ministry said on Sunday (September 27). Hopes for the emergence of herd immunity in the largest city of the Amazon – Manaus have died out.

According to the ministry’s data, the total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic has already exceeded 4.7 million, and the official balance of deaths has increased to 141,741.

Bars, nightclubs and beaches have closed in Manaus, the largest city in the Amazon. Meetings and parties with large numbers of people were banned, and the opening hours of restaurants and shops were limited.

The number of infections and deaths due to the coronavirus has started to rise again rapidly. This put an end to hopes that the so-called herd or collective immunity.

Such resilience occurs when a significant percentage of a given community achieves it, making the spread of a pandemic unlikely.

Previously, Manaus saw a sudden drop in deaths from COVID-19, following record fatalities in April and May. According to researchers at the University of Sao Paulo, this could indicate the emergence of herd immunity. However, they warned that this could be a temporary phenomenon.

Brazil is the third most affected country in the world by the number of infections, after the United States and India. However, in terms of the number of deaths, it ranks second after the USA.
