Exitpolls: Biden wins final pre-election in the run-up to ‘Super Tuesday’ | NOW

The former American vice president Joe Biden seems to have won a first Democratic primacy. Exitpolls and preliminary results show that he is leading in the state of South Carolina, with a big lead over rival Bernie Sanders. The victory of Biden takes place just before a crucial point in the election: on Tuesday voters in fourteen states can go to the polls.

An intermediate ranking after counting 90 percent of the votes shows that so far 49 percent of all votes are for Biden, which is good for 27 delegates. “Our campaign is not dead, despite reports in the media,” Biden exulted at an election meeting.

Sanders follows in second place with 20 percent of the voters, good for nine electors. Billionaire Tom Meyer follows in third place with 11.4 percent of the votes. That disappointing result turned out to be the reason for him to stop his presidential campaign immediately: Meyer had fully invested in South Carolina and spent tens of millions of euros out of his own pocket in the state.

Intermediate ranking won per candidate:

  • Bernie Sanders: 53 electors
  • Joe Biden: 41
  • Pete Buttigieg: 26
  • Elizabeth Warren: 8
  • Amy Klobuchar: 7

To win the presidential nomination of the Democratic camp, a candidate must have 1,991 electors behind him. A total of 3,979 electors can be won.

Meyer spoke at his election meeting that he “no longer sees a path to the presidential nomination”. The 78-year-old Sanders responded with a shrug at the first results: “You can’t win all primaries,” said the Vermont senator.

Biden grabs momentum in the run-up to ‘Super Tuesday’

With the likely election victory, Biden seizes the momentum in the run-up to ‘Super Tuesday’. On Tuesday, not one, but fourteen different American states will vote for about a third of all available electors. The Biden election campaign is said to have received a record amount of donations after the exit polls.

In previous primaries so far, Biden ran behind the facts and had to watch Senator Sanders in New Hampshire and Nevada get the most votes, while former mayor of Indiana Pete Buttigieg in Iowa came out as the winner. Prior to the election, Biden was seen as the top favorite for the win, but after the disappointing results, he fell back in the polls.

During ‘Super Tuesday’ Michael Bloomberg is also viewed with high expectations. The billionaire has so far left all four previous primaries and tried to put himself on the map as much as possible in the fourteen states that are up for grabs on Tuesday.
