Coronavirus impacts Belgian airports

Liege Airport and Charleroi Airport have made arrangements.

Theiege Airport, which is connected to a dozen Chinese cities, expects the coronavirus to impact cargo traffic in the coming weeks due to the suspension of several flights and the quarantine imposed by the Chinese authorities in certain areas , said Monday Jean-Luc Crucke, the Walloon minister in charge of Airports.

Specialized in freight, Liège airport has a “health threat” plan integrated into its internal emergency plan. As soon as the virus was announced, which has so far killed more than 360 people in China, the vigilance phase of this plan was launched. In particular, it involves the publication on the airport website of information on how to recognize the signs of the disease and the actions to be taken. A single point of contact has also been set up in close contact with the Belgian health authorities.

Canceled flights?

Depending on the evolution of the situation and the recommendations issued by the health authorities, the appropriate measures will be taken with immediate effect, assured the minister questioned on the subject in committee of the Walloon parliament.

“For the time being, Liege Airport has seen no impact thanks to the Chinese New Year period, which traditionally marks a slowdown in activity in the region. But in the coming weeks, the airport expects the suspension of several flights and the quarantine imposed by the Chinese authorities to be felt, “added Jean-Luc Crucke.

As for Charleroi airport, it has activated its permanent surveillance committee provided for in its epidemiological and health plan in order to monitor the development of the possible danger caused by the coronavirus. But BSCA does not have a direct link with China, there is, for the moment, no particular measure to be taken even if the basic hygiene measures have been reminded to the personnel, concluded the minister.
