SDisinfectants have been sold out for weeks, worse, they are stolen from doctors’ offices and clinics. But there is still one way to disinfect everything: with UV light, more precisely with UV-C light. The sale of UV-C lamps has skyrocketed since the beginning of the corona crisis. A South Korean company reports that the demand for its UV-C LEDs has increased five-fold. According to the company, their lamps kill 90 percent of the corona viruses when exposed to radiation for one minute.
UV-C light seems to be a miracle tool: it frees you from viruses, bacteria and even mold. Since the outbreak of the corona crisis, China has been using it to disinfect banknotes and drive UV-C robots to hospitals, and in Moscow to disinfect subways. We spoke to Benno Bucher from the Rapperswil Technical University in Switzerland about the limits and possibilities of light.
