Coronavirus: at Eupen, we produce endless reusable masks

Only the filters must be changed and discarded, the mask can be sterilized at high temperature.

Lheenoise company Weimat, specialized in the design, molding and manufacture of accessories as well as in precision mechanics, presented Friday the durable protective masks it produces to fight against the spread of the coronavirus.

At the beginning of April, when orders in the aeronautics and automotive sectors fell sharply due to the coronavirus crisis, the management of Weimat decided to put their skills and tools at profit to produce protective masks, Belgian, durable and reusable.

“In 48 hours, we launched a first prototype mask. The great asset of the company is to master the whole industry. We designed and manufactured the mold and then, thanks to the injection of plastic, we managed to create masks which can be sterilized at high temperature with steam but which can also simply be put in the dishwasher. Only the filters should be changed and discarded, ”explained the CEO of the company, Alex Weiss, who insists on the ecological aspect of these protections.

Two types of masks are currently produced by the company: LeanMask Day, which can be compared to surgical masks, and LeanMask MED, which is in the process of obtaining FFP2 certification.

The family business, which has the capacity to produce 100,000 to 120,000 masks per week, has already sold 10,000 of its production equipment to companies, medical offices, catering establishments, etc.

The boss of the Eupenoise company also “regretted that the authorities, and particularly the German-speaking Community, preferred masks manufactured abroad rather than 100% Belgian protections, produced by a local company which employs 45 people”.
