Coronavirus: Almost one in five people in New York could have been infected

Accordingly, in the city of New York, 19.9 percent of the tested antibodies were found that arise after an infection with the corona virus. However, the numbers differ significantly in the individual districts:

  • In the Bronx, a particularly badly affected and rather poorer district, antibodies were found in 27.6 percent of those tested.

  • In wealthier Manhattan, this was the case for 17.3 percent of the samples.

For the study, people were selected who had been in grocery stores and public buildings in the state in the past two weeks. According to the preliminary figures, 13.1 percent of the men tested tested positive, and 11.5 percent of the women tested were positive, as on the state’s website you can see.

According to official information, around 170,000 positive cases had been found in the metropolis, which has around 8.4 million inhabitants.

The data of the now published study suggest that the actual number could have been around ten times as high. However, the current antibody studies are still in the early stages of development and it is unclear how accurate they are.

In the past week, around 300 people died every day in New York state from diseases that the virus is believed to have caused.

Many researchers assume that those who already had the pathogen Sars-CoV-2 in their bodies are immune to the disease Covid-19 at least for a certain period of time. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the assumption that antibodies in the blood make you immune to the virus has not yet been scientifically proven.
